With an advantageous tax regime, Guernsey has over the last 30 years become a strong internationally recognised offshore financial services jurisdiction in its own right. Immigration is controlled through the issuing of Housing Licences, most normally for a fixed term up to 5 years, Licence holders can access the local housing market accommodation (as opposed to the significantly higher Open Market) either by buying or renting. Taxation is lower than the UK with a top tax rate of 20%. There is no VAT on goods purchased. There is no Council tax but there are two ‘community’ taxes, cost for the two combined are in the order of at least 50% of what council tax would be. Guernsey has its own health service where Doctors visits are subsidised. There is a high quality well funded hospital where all general health care is provided including many major operations. However, for certain specialist treatment, there is an agreement with the UK for such treatment to be provided at the relevant UK hospital. Private health provision is also available. Guernsey is very proud of its education service which is of a standard equal to the top authorities in the UK. Guernsey still retains the 11 Plus system with approximately 25% of 11 years old moving on to the co-educational Grammar School. Alongside the main stream schools there is a thriving part-subsidised private sector, school fees are significantly less than for equivalent private education in the UK. There are daily links by air and sea to the UK and neighbouring island of Jersey and to France. All modern tele-communications services expected in a hi-tech society are available. A feature of living in Guernsey is the proximity of all facilities. There are thriving sporting and arts communities with the full range of activities available. Guernsey has an intriguing history with many sites of interest to explore. For eating out the island is blessed by many high quality restaurants. Shopping is also well catered for. The sea, many fine beaches and stunning cliffs are never far away. Guernsey is a high quality internationally recognised financial services centre. However unlike the normal ‘city life’ there is minimal travelling time from home to work. Whilst the island is reliant on the motor car and the roads are often small and busy, journeys rarely take more than 20 minutes therefore there is the opportunity for a more ‘balanced’ lifestyle.
